Why Ketchup stains are tricky

Composite food stains combine a protein component with an acidic tannin or dye pigment, each requiring different chemistry to remove.

How to prevent Ketchup stains

The tomato pigment and vinegar in ketchup set quickly when heated. Rinse with cold water from the back of the fabric to push the stain out rather than through. Apply dish soap to the front and work it in gently before rinsing.
