How to Unshrink Clothes

The baby shampoo soak method works on most garments — cotton, wool, denim, and rayon. It relaxes fibre bonds so you can stretch the fabric back. Start within 24 hours of the shrinkage for the best result.

The Standard Method (Works on Most Fabrics)

  1. 1

Fill a basin with lukewarm water

Use cool to lukewarm water (around 30°C). Hot water continues the damage. Cold water makes the fibres stiff and less pliable.

  2. 2

Add 1–2 tablespoons of baby shampoo or hair conditioner

These contain surfactants that relax protein and cellulose fibres. Regular shampoo works but avoid harsh detergents — they tighten fibres.

  3. 3

Submerge the garment and leave for 20–30 minutes

Do not agitate. Let it soak passively. The conditioner needs time to penetrate the fibres and relax the molecular bonds.

  4. 4

Remove and gently press out water — do NOT wring

Wringing twists the fibres and sets the shrunken shape. Lift the garment out, lay it on a clean dry towel, and roll the towel to absorb water.

  5. 5

Lay flat and manually stretch to original dimensions

Work from the centre outward. Stretch the width, then the length, then the sleeves. Use a ruler or original garment dimensions as a target.

  6. 6

Pin or block in place and air-dry flat

Foam blocking mats with rust-proof pins work best for wool. For cotton, simply keep it stretched flat on a dry towel. Avoid hanging — gravity will re-distort the shape.

  7. 7

    Repeat if needed

One cycle rarely fully restores a heavily shrunken item. Let it dry completely, assess the size, and repeat the soak-and-stretch up to 3 times.

Recovery by Fabric Type

CottonHigh recovery

Baby shampoo soak (20 min) + manual stretch while damp

Multiple wash-cycles of shrinkage may be permanent

WoolHigh recovery

Hair conditioner soak + block-dry flat on a towel

Avoid wringing — breaks fibres. Wet wool is very fragile

DenimMedium recovery

Spray damp, wear while wet, move freely until dry

Works best on light shrinkage; heavy shrinkage needs repeat cycles

PolyesterLow recovery

Low-heat tumble + gentle stretch while warm

Polyester heat-sets permanently — re-stretching rarely fully restores

Wool / CashmereHigh recovery

Lukewarm conditioner soak + reshape on blocking mat

Never rub or twist wet cashmere — it felts instantly

Rayon / ViscoseMedium recovery

Baby shampoo soak + block-dry on a flat surface

Rayon is extremely weak when wet. Handle very gently

LinenMedium recovery

Spray damp, stretch lengthwise, iron on medium while damp

Heat-based stretching works best; avoid soaking

SilkLow recovery

Lukewarm soak (no agitation) + block-dry flat

Silk shrinks from heat, not mechanical action — re-stretching is limited

When Shrinkage Is Permanent

Some shrinkage cannot be reversed regardless of method:

  • Wool or cashmere that has felted (matted surface, stiff texture) — the fibres have fused
  • Polyester or nylon that was tumble-dried on high heat repeatedly
  • Any garment that has gone through multiple wash-shrink cycles
  • Structured garments (blazers, tailored jackets) — interfacing shrinks differently to shell fabric
  • Denim that was pre-washed at manufacture and labelled 'true-to-size pre-shrunk'

Prevent Shrinkage Next Time

Always read the care label

Machine wash temperature is the biggest cause of shrinkage. Most shrinkage happens at 60°C+.

Wash wool and silk by hand

Machine agitation causes felting in wool. Even a 'wool cycle' has some risk. See hand washing guide.

Dry flat or hang, never tumble high

Tumble dryers are the second biggest cause. Use low heat or air-only for anything that can shrink.

Buy slightly large for untested garments

New cotton items often shrink 5–10% on first wash even at low temperature. Size up on first purchase.

Pre-wash fabric before sewing

If you sew your own clothes, pre-shrink fabric before cutting. A single cool machine wash handles most initial shrinkage.

FAQ

Can you really unshrink clothes?

Yes, in many cases. The baby shampoo or hair conditioner soak method works by relaxing fibre bonds so you can manually stretch the garment back. It works best on cotton, wool, and rayon. It is less effective on polyester and nylon, which heat-set permanently.

How long does the baby shampoo unshrink method take?

30 minutes soaking, 10 minutes stretching, then 4–12 hours drying flat. The total active time is under an hour. Repeat cycles may be needed for heavy shrinkage.

Does hair conditioner unshrink wool?

Yes. Hair conditioner works particularly well on wool because it relaxes the protein scales on the fibre that cause felting-style shrinkage. Soak in lukewarm water with 2 tbsp conditioner for 20 minutes, then block-dry flat.

Can I unshrink a cotton shirt that went through the dryer?

Usually yes, if it's only been through 1–2 cycles. Soak in cool water with baby shampoo for 20 minutes, press out excess water, stretch manually, and dry flat. Repeated dryer cycles cause cumulative shrinkage that becomes harder to reverse.
